Great Power and Beauty Await You

thepowerofabeautifulstillness Great Power and Beauty Await You

This weekend, great power and beauty await you if you’re willing to stop and be still. I don’t know about you, but the past few weeks, my life has been pretty hectic with lots of work, high school graduation parties and family birthdays. I come from a large family, so between Krista’s family and my family, it seems like we’re going to a birthday party every other week. Now, don’t misunderstand me. I love my work with The Grove, working with artists, writing and film producing…and birthday parties! But everyday, there is a larger life calling out to me. It’s the invitation of God to stop and be still.

When was the last time you slowed down to soak in the beauty all around you? To really be still? It’s essential to creating a beautiful life. Read on…

Are You in Awe of the Aching Beauty of God’s Creation?

When was the last time you soaked in the aching beauty of God’s creation? Or let me ask you, how does the aching beauty of God’s creation move you? I hope it does. God’s creation could be the very heart monitor you need to check the condition of your spiritual life. The music of God’s creation is all around us and this past weekend, I had a deep soak in the visual artistry of God. A long drive through vineyards, past California oaks, and the Pacific Ocean along Santa Barbara tunes you into the frequency of God’s love like no other. If there is one thing that renews my spirit, it is the beauty of God’s creation. I have a sneaking suspicion that God’s creation does the same for you. Let me share a story. It may inspire you to go for a slow walk or long drive this coming weekend. Read on…

Top 10 Writing Tools & Inspiration

I speak to a lot of people who write, who want to write or who like the idea of writing. What I’ve found is that people need both good writing tools and the inspiration to get writing. (I know I do!) The top two questions I’m always asked about writing are: 1) What do I need to submit a book proposal to a publisher? 2) What books will help me become a better writer?Wordle words1 300x199 Top 10 Writing Tools & Inspiration

In mentoring young or new writers, one of the reasons I started this blog was to put all of my ideas, favorite tools and resources in one place. What has emerged over the past year are a number of posts that offer the practical tools and resources I use.

Neglecting Beauty? Consider the Lilies

Lilies1 768x1024 Neglecting Beauty? Consider the Lilies[dc]L[/dc]ast month, I was walking in my garden and I had a bit of an epiphany: I am guilty of neglecting beauty. Before me were a whole bunch of beautiful, slender lilies. There they were growing and I had completely missed them. In the rush of life, I had forgotten the very things I find pleasure in: simple, beautiful elegance. (These lilies are in our living room…the most massive ones ever from my garden!)

Neglecting beauty is a sure-fire way to sail into the creative doldrums. All of creation shouts before us and we wonder why we’re in a creative slump? Perhaps we’re a bit distracted. I know I have plenty of good reasons and bad excuses to neglect beauty. To name a few…

Listening to God: A Few Puzzling Questions to Ask Yourself

[H]ave you discovered how God speaks to us at the strangest times and in the strangest places? Being quiet and listening to God is a whole other story. I just spent the past few days in Post Falls, Idaho with one of my best friends. His family has a condo over the Spokane River, so when he asked me to get away for a “guys retreat” (i.e. he and I) for a few days, it took me all of 3.2 seconds to pray about going. I learned long ago that getting away to listen to God and enjoy His creation is good for my heart and soul.

When we arrived, I found this puzzle (yep, that’s the one!) on a small table next to a window overlooking the river, snow-covered mountains and a beautiful pine forest in the distance. I’m not much of a puzzle guy, but over the next couple days, I jumped in.  This puzzle prompted me to ask a few questions that, for me at least, I found worth listening to…
