Joey Recommends: The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller

[C]hances are you’ve heard the story of The Prodigal Son. You know, The Younger Brother who hacked off his Older Brother after wasting his inheritance on wine, women, and wild living? If you missed my post, The Prodigal God: Are We Loving or Judging Others, I want to recommend you get The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller. Today I’m beginning a new video series where I personally recommend some of my favorite writing tools, books, movies and creative resources. This is my top book for this year and here’s why…

Keller’s keen insights on a very old story can help us see our relationship with God in a whole new way. (I know I’m always in need of new insights!) Not only is The Prodigal God filled with great writing and thinking, I also love this book because…

      1. Keller renames the parable of The Prodigal Son to “The Story of the Two Lost Sons.” How long have we heard this story preached with large fingers pointing at that wandering, wasteful Younger Brother? Keller has some very keen insights on the ‘lostness’ of both The Younger Brother and The Elder Brother.
      2. Keller redefines what it means to be lost, particularly as we define sin and grace in relationship to God the Father. In the parable, both sons are lost and the Father loves both sons. Keller points out that many people have gone the way of The Younger Brother because the Church is filled with Older Brothers filled with judgment and critical spirits. Remember, the self-righteous Older Brother refused to go into the party!
      3. Last, unlike anything I’ve ever heard in church before, Keller describes “The True Elder Brother” as none-other than Jesus Christ, who pursued us all in our wandering from God. Keller is prophetic in describing the human tendency (whether we consider ourselves followers of God or not) of every person attempting to be their own Lord and Savior.

In short, we are all lost and we need the heart of God the Father and the love of Jesus Christ to pursue us and save us from our terribly lame attempts to save ourselves. Pig troughs? Can’t we do better than that? In The Prodigal God, you’ll be amazed at the lavish, extravagant love God has for you. It’s a wonderful celebration worth throwing a party for!
