Art, Life & Faith with AJ DeGrasse

I am loving SAFE, AJ DeGrasse’s new CD, which is why I want to introduce you to my singer/songwriter friend. AJ DeGrasse has been a long-time friend, co-worker and artist-collaborator with the ministry I serve, The Grove Center for the Arts & Media. Like many musicians and artists, his path to pursuing his creative gifts has not been a straight path…

In my ministry with The Grove, our focus is developing the spiritual formation and creative vision of artists in the Church. These are themes which are close to AJ’s heart, which is why I think you’ll be encouraged by what he has to say in this interview. He shares the story of his spiritual journey and how God led him to pursue his calling as a worship leader singer/songwriter. In this interview, he also explains a few key themes that influenced him as an artist. AJ speaks of…

1. Growing up in a Christian home, but how things changed when he went to college. Falling away from God led him to hearing God’s voice for the first time.

2. Listen to how he was on track to become a SCIENTIST, but how God led him to pursue his musical career. (Math and music do have a lot in common!)

3. AJ shares the tension he experienced about leading music in church and ministering to people in bars, pubs, & cafes. Love this!

4. He offers some great encouragement for artists to pursue their calling from the Lord.

Tomorrow, I’m heading out to spend a few days with AJ and ten other worship leader singer/songwriter types from Southern California and I can wait to see what God has in store. We’re going to spend some time at a lake house, have a few great meals together and see what God does in our midst as we encourage one another to walk closer with Christ as we pursue the creative calling He’s given us. It’s the first gathering The Grove Center for the Arts & Media has sponsored in some time and we’re excited about more gatherings like this in 2012.

Our goal is to encourage artists like AJ to pursue the creative calling God has given them. We want to bring the beauty, truth and goodness of God to this world in oh so many wonderful ways…

Questions: What about you? Who has the Lord called you to be? What has the Lord called you to do? Whether your gifts are artistic or not, how are you using your gifts in the world around you?

I’d love your thoughts and comments…
