Do It Anyway: Thoughts from Mother Teresa

[O]ne of the most popular posts here on Art, Life & Faith is this poem written by Mother Teresa. When facing difficult people and an often-harsh world, Mother Teresa’s challenge to “Do It Anyway” offer a refreshing perspective of what it means to walk intimately with God. Mother Teresa’s simple and profound thoughts on the love of God, service to others, and living a simple life of faithfulness to God continues to inspire millions worldwide.

Her inspirational thoughts of what it means to love others in the name of Jesus strike an authentic, beautiful chord for everyone who desires a deeper walk with God. We all need gentle reminders to continue in the way of Jesus…

I hope this poem encourages you today and spurs you to “Do It Anyway.”

Do It Anyway

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,  you will win some false friends and true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

Questions:  As you reflect on Mother Teresa’s words, what idea strikes you the most? What thought challenges you? What do you find most difficult about living the way she suggests? How might the Holy Spirit develop in you a greater life of love and service to God and others today?

Lord, by your mercy and grace, give us the strength to follow you closer today. Help us to do it anyway…in your name we pray.

I’d love your thoughts and…
